2 Practice. Not just marksmanship. Practice your draw. It appears like the first guy shot was too slow on his draw and paid the price.
I suspect that it might have been a change in clothing for Church, and a failure to verify that a quick draw could still be made in his non-daily outfit. Or a change in holster due to the change in the environment. Any change in clothing needs to be verified for drawing capability.
He would have been better to have tried drawing from a sitting position. Check out the y-tube channel ASP for a daily video and compendium of armed crimes of various types. A slow draw gets people shot.
