The only incident I can think of off-hand (where a CCW carrier thwarted a mass shooting) was the New Life Church shooting that was ended by a parishioner. These incidents happen all of the time. They just don't make the news. A mass shooting that doesn't happen thanks to a CCW holder just isn't bloody enough to make the news.
For example, Aurora had another attempted spree shooting two weeks before the Batman shooting:
There is also this shooting, where an armed robber was herding the employees into the rear of the store, and was stopped when the manager shot him in the face. While we don't know that the robber intended to herd them into the back in order to massacre them, it is certainly probable.

In retrospect that was a stupid comment, wasn't it? You hit the nail on the head -- the value of concealed carry in situations like that is that they take the "mass" out of "mass shooting". Duh.
Not stupid. Just wanted to post some CCW success stories.
This is actually a very knotty problem from a statistical standpoint. How do measure something that didn't happen? In many cases, only two people know what happened, such as when a criminal is sizing up someone, and the intended victim's situational awareness makes the perp go somewhere else. Or if the intended victim puts a hand on a gun and scares the bad guy off.
Estimates vary all over the place from the Brady bunch saying firearms owners prevent 80,000 crimes per year (but even they admit we're preventing crimes) up to around 10 million per year being prevented. I think that most people use Gary Kleck's numbers (pretty sure he's from FSU). He says gun owners prevent around 2 million crimes per year, and most are prevented without firing a shot.
I carry everywhere. I don't give a shit about signs or ordinances. I refuse to be a victim.
I won't carry into a courthouse though.
Also of importance, the Dem Nazis are at it again.
