The Day After, 30 years later

It was 30 years ago today: ABC aired a made for TV movie titled The Day After. I watched that movie as a teen, and frankly, it gave me nightmares. The movie was about surviving a nuclear exchange between the US and the Soviet Union. It was a real threat in those days.

For those of you that are too young to remember, growing up under the threat of nuclear holocaust was a real and ever present danger that we all learned to accept. I remember having "duck and cover" drills when I was in elementary school. On notification, we were trained to duck under our desks, cover our heads, and wait for the end.

The movie seemed very real and scary to me at the time, and I had nightmares about it for weeks.

I was a little younger when that movie aired. It came on after my bed time so while I did catch a little of it here and there (Mom, I need some water. Daddy, I'm just headed to the bathroom.) I really didn't watch the whole thing. All I can remember of it now is that there were images of the front of buildings blowing out and the destruction of a mannequin. (Well, then I thought it was a mannequin...) One day I'll have to actually sit down and watch the movie to see what it was really about.

(I never got nightmares from what little I saw but I did get the creeps and I've never been a big fan of post-apocalypse movies.)

I saw that movie when I was a kid and it scared the hell out of me. I recently downloaded it from YouTube but have been too scared to watch it.

Sadly, the threat is still there, even more so today that our CiC has agreed to reduce our nuclear stockpile and Putin apparently has decided to build more.
