Posers

While I was on one of the dive boats this weekend, we had a man riding along with his wife. He said that he had not been diving since he got out of the Navy in 1992, and was out of practice. I asked him what he did, and he replied "I was on Special Teams."

Blink. He was a punt returner?

I told him I used to be in the Navy, and that I was an Electrician's Mate Second Class. I told him that I went to boot camp in Orlando. He told me how lucky I was, and said that he had done boot and A school in Great Lakes.

So I asked him where he was stationed, and he replied that he was stationed at New London, CT. He then told me that he was a Machinist Mate First Class. He started to tell me stories about how he would be inserted into places by exiting the submarine through a small tube.

So I asked him what his BUD/S class number was. He replied, "Buds? What's that?"

I immediately knew that he was a poser. He wasn't a SEAL, because he didn't know what BUD/S was. I know at least 4 people who claim that they were at one time SEALs. They are all likely lying.

Why do so many feel the need to make themselves look cool by claiming to be something that they are not?

  1. We had an EMT to that told us that he was a "Ranger Seal" in the military. We never quite knew what he was talking about and it was apparent that neither did he.

He had a career ending broken finger nail injury and was last seen driving a taxi cab.

  2. I know a former Navy diver but he wasn't a SEAL he was a SeaBee. Most of his diving was helmet diving with surface air and bolting together forms for pouring concrete.

He told me the most excitement he had was during the first Gulf war when he and some other divers were sent down to check the moorings of the oil rigs the IRG took over in the gulf to be sure they weren't damaged.

  3. I've been to Bud school!

I learned I don't like American Budweiser and do like Czech Budweiser. I also cannot balance a ball on my nose, which is a certain seal requirement, but I am pretty good with the little bike horns.

Plus, when we were done learning, the class and the teacher were buds!

Odd, I was in the Army not the Navy...

  4. Every time I hear the words "Airborn" & "Ranger" in the same sentence epically at the start of the story my BS meter goes to 10. I was a combat medic in Armor in the 80's and took a number of classes with actual 18D SF medics and to talk to them outside of class you would never know it. The real deals never brag about it. We even have guys here in OKC running around saying they are Vietnam vets capt in the airborne rangers. I was born during the Vietnam war and am just 47. So tell me again how your younger than me and served in the same war my dad was at?
